GEZE sliding doors systems for an extra-class terminal

Dynamic shapes, state-of-the-art materials and a functional aesthetic mark the prize-winning Madrid-Barajas airport terminal at Spain's most important airport. The automatic sliding doors and safety solutions by GEZE fit perfectly into the design concept.

Distinguished airport architecture

With the commissioning of the new Madrid-Barajas airport terminal, the development of Spain's largest and most important airport was finally finished after a ten-year construction. The state-of-the-art 120,000 m²-building, which was created for €6 billion in accordance with the plans by the Spanish architect Antonio Lamela and his British colleague Richard Rogers, is one of the world's most spectacular airport buildings.

A superlative building - from the roof to the door drives

Creating a spacious but relaxed atmosphere, where travelers can move comfortably - the giant building complex was split into several structures, in accordance with this space concept. The main terminal is divided into three levels, spanned by a vast roof supported by steel 'trees'. The light, curved roof shape, the simple palette of materials, large quantities of incoming daylight and spatial clarity lend the architecture a straightforward character. And the technical equipment is also deserving of praise, for its modernity and maximum functionality; from the check-in desk to the information system to the passenger and baggage transport - and, of course, the automatic sliding door systems - the technology meets the highest international standards.

Precise door drives - powerful and visually discreet

The entrance areas of the terminals allow passengers and visitors to enter through spacious automatic sliding doors with GEZE Econodrive EL-FR sliding door drives. The powerful, extremely discreet drives are made for infrastructure areas with high frequencies of visitors. The large-size glass door leaves move quietly and precisely, and all movement parameters can be individually set. With their elegant, minimalist design, the sliding door systems suit the colour scheme and entire design of the entrance halls, ensure safe ease of access and also act as protection against wind. Naturally, GEZE Econodrive EL-FR door drives are type tested in accordance with ZH 1/494 and AutSchR.

Secured escape routes thanks to multifunctional door systems

Swing door to the outdoor area of the airport terminal

GEZE has also provided multifunctional swing doors for the new building.

Swing doors with the GEZE TSA-160 door drive are also used throughout the building complex. The automatic sliding door drives offer barrier-free ease of access and can also be held open for long periods if programmed to do so. The doors in escape routes can be reliably opened in the event of a power cut, meaning that escape and rescue routes are secured. Thanks to an integrated smoke switch, the swing doors with TSA-160 door drives in the RWA design open automatically in the event of a fire, for the natural exhaustion of the building.
